Vice President Kashim Shettima Cancels Trip to Commonwealth Summit After Plane Incident

Vice President Kashim Shettima has canceled his trip to the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Summit in Samoa. President Bola Tinubu had appointed Shettima to represent Nigeria at the ongoing event.

The cancellation occurred after a foreign object struck the Vice President's plane during a stopover at JFK Airport in New York. This information was confirmed in a statement from the Presidency on the evening of October 24.

The statement, signed by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, explained that the impact caused damage to the cockpit windscreen of the aircraft. It read, “Vice President Kashim Shettima’s trip to Samoa to represent Nigeria at the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Summit has been cancelled after a foreign object hit his plane during a stopover at JFK Airport in New York. The foreign object damaged the cockpit windscreen of the plane.”

In response to the incident, President Tinubu quickly approved a ministerial delegation to represent Nigeria at the summit in Apia, the capital of Samoa, while repairs to the aircraft are underway. The delegation will be led by the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal.

The Commonwealth Summit, which began on October 21, is scheduled to conclude on October 26.
