VIDEO - Seun Kuti Denies Control Over Social Critic Very Dark Man's Posts

Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has distanced himself from the social media posts made by social critic Very Dark Man (VDM), clarifying that he has no influence over what VDM shares online.

The clarification comes after a controversial audio tape was released by VDM on September 24th, where Nigerian crossdresser Bobrisky was allegedly heard claiming that rapper Falz and his father, human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, tried to secure him a presidential pardon in exchange for ₦10 million. During his analysis of the tape, VDM made comments that many perceived as questioning Falz's sexual orientation, sparking widespread reaction.

In response to the controversy, Seun Kuti acknowledged that while he and VDM have a good relationship, he does not control VDM's actions or statements. In a video shared on October 4th, Seun explained that VDM only verbally informed him of the audio tape but did not play it for him. Seun emphasized that he never intended for VDM to insult or defame Falana, who was his late father Fela's lawyer.

"I was not conniving, nor did I have any ulterior motive," Seun explained. "If I was behind it, I wouldn’t have publicly admitted VDM told me before releasing it. I hold no ill will towards Uncle Femi [Falana], and it wasn’t my intention to disrespect him in any way."

Seun also expressed regret if the situation had offended Femi Falana and clarified that his focus has always been on institutional issues, like the alleged lapses involving the EFCC. He added that he had no desire to escalate tensions between Falz and VDM, both of whom he considers younger brothers.

Addressing VDM’s use of innuendos in his posts, Seun stated, "When people involve me in VDM’s posts, it’s surprising. I am not his producer, nor do I approve what he says beforehand. Even if I had asked him not to do it, he would have gone ahead anyway."

Seun concluded by noting that he had urged VDM to resolve the matter directly with Falz and expressed his wish for an amicable resolution between the two.
