Woman Dies After Falling Overboard from Cruise Ship Near Channel Islands

A woman in her 20s has tragically died after falling overboard from the MSC Virtuosa cruise ship off the Channel Islands. The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Saturday, north of Les Casquets rocks, west of Alderney, according to the French coastguard.

Upon receiving a distress signal, a major rescue operation was launched. A French navy helicopter from Maupertus-sur-Mer was dispatched, accompanied by an offshore rescue vessel from Goury, an RNLI lifeboat from Alderney, and a Channel Islands air search plane.

The Channel Islands Air Search volunteer organization confirmed their involvement, stating: “We were called early this morning to assist in the search for a person overboard from the MSC Virtuosa north of Les Casquets." Their aircraft, Lions’ Pride, took off from Guernsey at 2:00 a.m. to join the search.

At around 3:00 a.m. local time, the woman was recovered from the water by the French navy helicopter and taken to a rescue center in Tourlaville. Despite efforts from medical personnel, she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The tragic incident has shocked both the cruise ship passengers and rescue teams, who were involved in the intensive overnight operation.
