Anambra Police Clarify Shooting Incident at Izuchukwu Junction Ahead of Senator Ubah’s Burial

The Anambra State Police Command has provided clarification regarding the shooting incident that occurred at Izuchukwu Junction along the Nnobi-Nnewi road on Wednesday, November 20, around 7 p.m.

In a statement, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, explained that the gunfire resulted from a case of mistaken identity, where security operatives mistook police officers for hostile forces and opened fire on them.

“The Command wishes to emphasize that the attack on the operatives was not perpetrated by non-state actors, nor was it an attempt to disrupt the burial of late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah,” Ikenga stated.

According to preliminary investigations, security operatives were pursuing a suspect when the confrontation occurred at a checkpoint. During the exchange, bullets struck the fuel tank of a Toyota Venza sedan carrying the police officers, causing the vehicle to catch fire.

Two innocent bystanders were injured in the incident and have since been hospitalized.

The Command has urged the public to remain calm while investigations into the incident continue. “Joint Security Forces have been deployed to maintain peace in Nnewi throughout the burial ceremonies of the late Senator,” Ikenga assured.

Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who passed away in London in July 2024, is set to be buried on Friday, November 22. Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring a peaceful environment during the burial proceedings.

The Police Command has promised to provide updates on the incident as investigations progress.
