The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Dennis Idahosa, has dismissed allegations of nepotism following the appointment of Cyril Oshiomhole, son of former Governor Adams Oshiomhole, as the state’s Commissioner for Health.
Addressing the controversy on Channels Television on Wednesday, Idahosa clarified that the decision to appoint Cyril was based purely on merit and not influenced by his family connections. He revealed that Adams Oshiomhole, now a serving senator, had initially opposed his son’s nomination for the role.
“This position has nothing to do with Adams Oshiomhole,” Idahosa stated. “In fact, Adams opposed it. He was against the nomination because of the vision the governor has for the people of Edo State. The governor made the decision to appoint Cyril based on competence, not because of his father.”
Idahosa highlighted Cyril Oshiomhole’s qualifications, describing him as a well-trained medical professional with education and experience gained both in Nigeria and the United States. “Cyril is a seasoned medical doctor. He studied in Nigeria and went on to further his studies in the United States. He is fully qualified to be in the cabinet,” the deputy governor explained.
The deputy governor stressed that Cyril’s family ties should not overshadow his individual capabilities. “The fact that he is Oshiomhole’s son does not disqualify him from holding a position he is competent to manage. He will serve as Commissioner for Health based on merit,” he added.
Idahosa concluded by reaffirming the state government’s commitment to appointing individuals based on their qualifications and ability to deliver results. The clarification aims to address concerns of favoritism and reassure Edo residents of the administration’s focus on competence and service.
Cyril Oshiomhole’s appointment comes amidst heightened scrutiny, but officials maintain that his expertise as a medical doctor makes him an asset to the Edo State cabinet.
