Bauchi State Hisbah Board Detains Elderly Man Over Viral Photos of Ex-Girlfriends

The Bauchi State Hisbah Board has detained Alhaji Bala Mohammed, an elderly man from Dass Local Government Area, after multiple photos of him with former girlfriends went viral online. Many of the photos, featuring over 50 women—some now married—were shared widely on social media, sparking significant controversy.

Mohammed’s arrest followed complaints by several of his ex-partners, who expressed distress over the renewed circulation of these images. According to Mohammed, however, these photos were originally taken over two decades ago during his personal leisure time, with no intention to harm or embarrass anyone. He claimed that a recent resurgence of the images on social media was initiated by Facebook friends who shared them as nostalgic memories, inadvertently causing distress to those involved.

Speaking from the Hisbah Board’s office, Mohammed expressed regret over the offense his photos may have caused among northern Nigerian Muslims. He defended his actions, citing that he was simply enjoying his life in a secular society. “I took these pictures many years ago, purely out of enjoyment. Now, some people have rediscovered and reshared them, leading to complaints from the women,” he explained. Mohammed added that his actions were personal and conducted within his own lifestyle choices.

Extending apologies to the women affected, he emphasized that he harbors no ill intent, noting that his approach to life differs from the expectations of others. Mohammed stated, “Everyone has their own way of life; I shared those photos for pleasure, not to hurt anyone.”
