The government of Equatorial Guinea has terminated Baltasar Ebang Engonga from his role as Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF) following the online leak of numerous explicit videos featuring him with multiple women, some allegedly connected to high-profile figures in the country.
Initially suspended from his post, Mr. Engonga faced public outcry when over 400 videos surfaced, showing him in intimate encounters, sparking a national scandal. According to Real Equatorial Guinea, President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo formally ordered his dismissal via Decree No. 118/2024 on November 4. The decree cited misconduct and behavior inconsistent with the standards expected of public office.
TVGE, Equatorial Guinea’s state broadcaster, reported that the videos were allegedly leaked during Mr. Engonga's detention at Malabo's notorious Black Beach prison, where he was being held on accusations of embezzling public funds.
Following the scandal, Vice President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue instructed the telecommunications ministry, regulatory bodies, and telecom companies to halt the spread of pornographic videos, noting the government’s duty to protect families from such damaging content.
Equatorial Guinea’s chief prosecutor, Anatolio Nzang Nguema, further stated that if medical tests confirm Mr. Engonga has a sexually transmitted infection, he could face prosecution for potentially endangering public health.
