Victor Martinez, the owner of a Hispanic radio station in Allentown, Pennsylvania, has stirred controversy by claiming that Latino men didn’t vote for U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris due to traditional views on gender roles. According to Martinez, many Latino men still hold the belief that "a woman belongs in the kitchen," which influenced their decision to support Donald Trump over Harris.
In an interview on MSNBC with anchor Nicolle Wallace, Martinez stated, “The man, he’s the one, the provider. And we’re the boss, and we still, unfortunately, have a lot of Latinos with that mentality where the woman belongs in the kitchen.” He suggested that this mindset played a role in why Latino men favored Trump, who was the eventual winner in key battleground states during the 2020 election.
However, some Hispanic voters in Pennsylvania, a crucial state in Joe Biden's 2020 victory, have cited economic concerns as the primary reason for shifting their support to Trump. North Philadelphia resident Miguel Garcia explained, "Prices went up, food went up, everything went up," which he said influenced his decision to back the Republican candidate.
Exit polling by NBC News and CBS News revealed that Kamala Harris garnered around 55% of the Hispanic vote in Pennsylvania, while Trump secured about 45%, marking a significant improvement for Trump compared to the 2020 election. On a national scale, exit polls also showed that Trump received 54% of the Hispanic male vote, compared to Harris's 44%.
Martinez, however, doubled down on his assertion, claiming that it was Latino men who decisively voted for Trump and that many were unwilling to support a female president. This claim comes amidst Trump's surprising victory in the historically Democratic Hispanic-majority district of Starr County, Texas, where he won more than 57% of the vote.
While Martinez’s comments have sparked debate, they shed light on the complex dynamics of Hispanic voting behavior and the influence of cultural values in political choices.
