Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has paid a heartfelt tribute to his late wife, Stella Obasanjo, recalling her tireless efforts to secure his release from prison. Speaking at the inauguration of the Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Benin, Edo State, Obasanjo described his wife as a key figure in his life, stating that no amount of recognition would be enough to honor her contributions.
During the ceremony, Obasanjo shared how Stella’s determination took her across the globe, from Vatican City to France, as she worked relentlessly to ensure his freedom. "My late wife went everywhere to ensure that I came out of prison alive," he said. Reflecting on the deep personal loss, he added, "We were planning for my wife’s 68th birthday anniversary. We never had that birthday before she died. It was very painful for me, in particular, and for all of us in my family."
Obasanjo expressed gratitude to the Edo State government and its people for dedicating the 250-bed hospital in her honor. "You can appreciate how thankful I am to you for doing this in her honour. I thank the head of government, I thank the members of your government, and I thank all the people of Edo State," he stated.
Additionally, the former president praised Governor Godwin Obaseki for his leadership, highlighting the importance of the new hospital as a symbol of progress. "With this hospital, you’re assured of first-class treatment for any ailment. More grace to the elbows of the governor. With this kind of edifice, I can say that the governor started well and is finishing well," Obasanjo remarked.
The Stella Obasanjo Hospital, now a testament to the late First Lady’s legacy, stands as a significant contribution to healthcare in the region, further solidifying Obasanjo's admiration for both his wife and the leadership of Governor Obaseki.
