Matt Gaetz, recently nominated by President-elect Donald Trump for the position of Attorney General, is under scrutiny following allegations of sexual misconduct, including claims of paying for sex and involvement with a minor.
Florida attorney Joel Leppard, representing two women connected to the case, revealed that his clients provided testimony to the House ethics committee, which was investigating Gaetz before his resignation from Congress. According to Leppard, the women alleged that Gaetz used Venmo to pay them for sexual encounters.
One of the women reportedly claimed she witnessed Gaetz engaging in sexual activity with her 17-year-old friend at a house party in July 2017. Leppard noted that Gaetz was allegedly unaware of the girl’s age at the time and cut off communication upon learning she was a minor. However, contact allegedly resumed after she turned 18.
Gaetz stepped down from his congressional role last week, shortly after Trump announced his nomination for Attorney General. His resignation effectively ended the ethics committee's investigation into his conduct.
Gaetz has firmly denied the allegations, maintaining his innocence regarding any sexual misconduct. The claims have yet to result in formal legal action, but they have sparked significant controversy surrounding his nomination.
As Attorney General-designate, Gaetz’s ability to assume the nation’s top legal position remains a subject of intense public and political debate.
