Tragic Floods in Spain Claim Life of Former Valencia Footballer

Spain is grappling with a devastating flood crisis that has claimed the lives of at least 158 people, with many others reported missing. Among the victims is former Valencia footballer Jose Castillejo, who tragically lost his life at the age of 28 in the disaster.

Emergency response teams are currently conducting house-to-house searches in the worst-affected areas, particularly in the Valencia region, where the flooding has caused widespread destruction. Reports indicate that heavy rains, amounting to more than a year’s worth within just eight hours, led to the catastrophic flooding, sweeping away buildings and bridges and submerging towns in muddy waters. Streets were left littered with overturned vehicles as the region faced an unprecedented deluge.

Valencia CF expressed their sorrow in a statement, mourning the loss of Castillejo, who was part of the club’s academy during his youth. "We regret the death of Jose Castillejo, a victim of the Dana disasters," the club stated. "He was part of the club's Academy until his youth stage and has played for several teams in the Valencian Community. RIP."

Eldense, a club Castillejo represented from January to August 2016, also shared their condolences. "We deeply regret Jose Castillejo's passing at 28, a former blue-and-red player in the 2015/2016 season. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends."

Having begun his career in the Valencia academy, Castillejo also played for various clubs in the region, including Paterna, CD Bunyol, Recam Colon, and Torre Levante.

Amid the ongoing crisis, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez urged residents to remain indoors as the country faces continued threats from the severe weather conditions. He raised the official crisis level, warning that "this phenomenon has not finished." The Valencia region has been particularly hard-hit, with at least 92 fatalities reported between late Tuesday and Wednesday morning alone. The situation remains critical as authorities work tirelessly to respond to the aftermath of this natural disaster.
