Brazil’s First Lady, Rosângela "Janja" Lula da Silva, stirred headlines over the weekend after making a blunt remark directed at billionaire Elon Musk during a G20-related event in Rio de Janeiro. Her comments came as she addressed the pressing issue of social media regulation to combat misinformation.
While speaking on Saturday, Janja joked about a ship’s horn interrupting her remarks, quipping, “I think it’s Elon Musk,” before adding, “I’m not afraid of you, f**k you, Elon Musk.”
Musk, the owner of social media platform X (formerly Twitter), reacted to a video of her remarks by posting a laughing emoji graphic. In a subsequent post, he commented, “They are going to lose the next election,” referring to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s administration.
The First Lady’s remarks were made during an event preceding the G20 summit, which is set to run from Monday to Tuesday. Her focus on regulating social media aligns with Brazil’s recent efforts to curb misinformation and hate speech on platforms like X.
Earlier this year, X faced legal challenges in Brazil, including a one-month suspension for failing to designate a legal representative in the country and ignoring court orders to block accounts accused of disseminating fake news. The platform’s suspension was lifted last month after it began complying with Brazilian court rulings.
Janja’s strong language and Musk’s swift online response have added to the debate over the role of social media in shaping public discourse. As the G20 summit unfolds, discussions about global tech regulation and its influence on democracy are expected to take center stage.
This exchange underscores the tension between tech moguls and political leaders, particularly in nations grappling with the societal impact of digital misinformation.
