A football player was tragically killed after being struck by lightning during a match in Huancayo, Peru. The incident also left five others injured.
The fatal event occurred in the Chilca district, where local teams Juventud Bellavista and Familia Chocca were competing. Video footage captured the moment 39-year-old player Jose Huga de la Cruz Meza was struck, causing him to collapse on the field. He was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
In addition to de la Cruz, goalkeeper Juan Chocca Llacta, 40, sustained severe burns from the lightning strike. The video shows at least eight players collapsing immediately after the strike, highlighting the chaos that ensued.
At the time of the incident, Bellavista was leading 2-0, with 22 minutes already played. The referee had decided to halt the game due to the ominous sounds of thunder approaching the stadium.
Reports suggest that de la Cruz may have been wearing a metal bracelet during the match, which could have attracted the lightning strike.
This tragic occurrence underscores the dangers associated with playing in severe weather conditions, prompting calls for greater safety measures during sporting events.
