10 Dead, Several Injured in Stampede at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama

 

A tragic stampede at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, on Saturday, December 21, 2024, resulted in the deaths of 10 individuals, including four children. The incident occurred during the distribution of food items to vulnerable and elderly persons at approximately 6:30 a.m.

According to reports, eight others sustained injuries of varying severity. Four of the injured victims have since been treated and discharged, while the remaining individuals are still receiving medical care.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, in a statement by its spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the stampede and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased while wishing the injured a swift recovery.

To prevent similar occurrences, the Command has issued a directive mandating that all organizations, religious institutions, and individuals planning public events, charitable activities, or large gatherings within the FCT notify the police in advance.

“This will enable the deployment of adequate security measures to ensure public safety and prevent avoidable tragedies,” the statement read.

The police also warned that failure to comply with the directive would result in organizers being held liable for any incidents or loss of life due to negligence.

The FCT Police Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the territory. Residents are encouraged to cooperate with law enforcement by adhering to these guidelines and reporting emergencies through the FCT Control Room at 0803 200 3913 or 0806 032 1234.
