Former President Barack Obama has unveiled his annual list of favorite songs, and two Nigerian artists, Rema and Asake, have earned a spot this year. Obama is known for sharing his curated playlist of beloved tracks each year, and his 2024 list, released on Saturday, December 21, continues that tradition.
Among the highlights of the list are Rema's "Yayo" and Asake's "Active," which features American rapper Travis Scott. Both tracks represent the global reach and influence of Afrobeats, with Rema and Asake standing as key figures in the genre's rise on the world stage.
Also featured on Obama's playlist is South African artist Tyla's track "Jump," which includes Gunna and Skillibeng. Additionally, Nigerian-American artists Shaboozey and Jordan Adetunji received recognition for their songs "A Bar Song" and "Kehlani," respectively.
The list also highlights global music icons like Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé, and Karol G, showcasing a diverse range of music from across the world.
In sharing the playlist, Obama invited his followers to explore the music and suggested that they recommend songs or artists he might have missed. "Here are my favorite songs from this year! Check them out if you’re looking to shake up your playlist – and let me know if there’s a song or artiste I should make sure to listen to," Obama wrote.
