A passenger plane operated by Azerbaijan Airlines crashed near the city of Aktau, Kazakhstan, on Wednesday, with preliminary reports indicating there were survivors, according to Kazakhstan’s emergencies ministry.
The crash occurred approximately three kilometers from Aktau, a key oil and gas hub located on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea. Emergency services are actively working to extinguish a fire at the site, and efforts are ongoing to assess the situation.
Kazakhstan’s transport ministry stated the Embraer 190 aircraft was carrying 62 passengers and five crew members. The plane, originally en route from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Grozny, Russia, was rerouted to Aktau due to poor visibility caused by fog in Grozny.
Azerbaijan Airlines, the national flag carrier, confirmed the incident, describing it as an emergency landing rather than a crash. “Information about casualties is currently being clarified but, according to preliminary information, there are survivors,” the ministry reported.
Details about the cause of the crash remain unclear, and both Kazakh and Azerbaijani authorities are expected to launch investigations into the incident.
This developing story highlights the risks associated with adverse weather conditions during air travel, and further updates are expected as officials work to clarify the situation.
