California’s northern Pacific coastline is under siege by massive waves, prompting urgent warnings for residents to steer clear of the ocean and all waterside structures. The National Weather Service (NWS) has forecast waves towering 20 to 30 feet high, creating life-threatening conditions expected to persist throughout the week.
The severe surf has already caused significant destruction and tragedy. In Santa Cruz, a 150-foot section of the city’s wharf was torn away by surging waves on Monday. Three city workers who fell into the ocean during the collapse were rescued, suffering only minor injuries.
Tragically, debris from the storm claimed the life of a man on a Watsonville beach. Emergency responders found him trapped beneath the wreckage at Sunset State Beach; he was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
In southern California, the Coast Guard announced Thursday that it had suspended the search for two men who went missing during a fishing trip near Palos Verdes. Wreckage believed to be from their boat was discovered earlier in the week, heightening fears about their fate.
Meanwhile, in Marina State Beach, a man was swept into the water by massive waves. Bystanders attempted to save him but were thwarted by the relentless surf and rip currents. Police confirmed that as of Tuesday, the man remains missing.
The NWS has issued strong advisories against entering the ocean, particularly for inexperienced swimmers. In the Bay Area, officials cautioned residents to avoid piers and wharves, emphasizing the unpredictability of the waves. “Never turn your back on the ocean,” the agency warned.
High surf and rip current warnings extend to the Los Angeles area, where the conditions have been deemed too dangerous for public safety.
Santa Cruz resident Bud Freitas described the aftermath as “total chaos.” Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, he recounted the widespread damage to beaches and neighborhoods. “It looks like a bomb went off,” Freitas said, painting a grim picture of the destruction.
With the threat of further destruction looming, authorities continue to stress the importance of vigilance and safety. The relentless waves, coupled with debris-laden waters, pose a significant danger to anyone venturing near the coastline.
California residents are urged to heed the warnings, stay away from hazardous areas, and prioritize their safety as the powerful storm continues its onslaught.
