Gabriel Boric, the 38-year-old president of Chile and the youngest leader in Latin America, has revealed he is expecting a child with his partner, Paula Carrasco. The announcement was made in the early hours of Wednesday, December 4, through a joint Instagram post featuring an ultrasound image of their baby.
"While we are waiting for you… we will do our best to make sure you can live in a fair and happy Chile," the couple wrote in the post.
This milestone marks a significant first in Chile’s history, as Boric will be the first sitting president of the traditionally Catholic-majority nation to welcome a child outside of marriage.
Carrasco, 30, is a multifaceted individual, balancing her career as an environmental chemist in Chile’s Ministry of the Environment with her role as a professional basketball player on the national team. The couple met in October 2023 during the Pan American Games hosted in Chile and went public with their relationship in September 2024.
Boric and Carrasco’s relationship follows his previous partnership with Irina Karamanos, a political scientist and sociologist. Karamanos briefly assumed the responsibilities of Chile’s first lady after Boric’s inauguration in March 2022 but stepped down from the role before their relationship ended in November 2023.
