The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has formally announced Saudi Arabia as the host nation for the 2034 FIFA World Cup. The decision was made during an Extraordinary FIFA Congress held on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, solidifying the Gulf nation’s place as a key player in international football.
Saudi Arabia was the sole bidder for the 2034 World Cup, receiving unanimous acclaim from over 200 FIFA member associations during a virtual meeting chaired by FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The announcement marks a significant milestone in the nation’s sporting ambitions.
"The vote of the congress is loud and clear," Infantino stated, following a display of applause from officials participating remotely.
Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming event, stating:
“We look forward to hosting an exceptional and unprecedented edition of the FIFA World Cup by harnessing our strengths and capabilities to bring joy to football fans around the world.”
FIFA also confirmed the host nations for the 2030 World Cup during the same congress. Spain, Portugal, and Morocco will serve as primary co-hosts in a historic six-nation collaboration. Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay will each host one game, celebrating the tournament’s centennial as it returns to South America, where the inaugural event was held in 1930.
The 2034 World Cup will follow the 2026 tournament, which is set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. With this announcement, Saudi Arabia joins a growing list of nations hosting football’s most prestigious tournament, reflecting FIFA’s vision of expanding the game’s global reach.
The Kingdom’s selection aligns with its ongoing Vision 2030 initiative, which emphasizes cultural, economic, and sporting advancements as part of its broader national development strategy.
As preparations commence, Saudi Arabia aims to showcase its capabilities on the world stage, promising an unforgettable World Cup experience for fans and players alike. This announcement also underscores FIFA’s continued efforts to bring football to diverse regions, celebrating the sport’s universal appeal.
