Authorities in Malaysia have arrested three Nigerian nationals and a Malaysian woman in connection with a human trafficking operation that exploited a 25-year-old Nigerian woman for s*x work.
The victim, lured to Malaysia under the false promise of a job as a domestic helper, reportedly managed to escape her captors and report the crime to local authorities. The incident unfolded in Bayan Lepas, where she had been held.
Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam, the Southwest District Police Chief, confirmed that a raid was conducted at 10 p.m. on Saturday, November 30, 2024. Law enforcement apprehended four suspects, including a local couple, all aged between 24 and 37.
"The victim arrived in Malaysia through Kuala Lumpur International Airport on October 10, after being deceived by a female agent of the same nationality," Sazalee explained. Instead of employment as a domestic helper, she was taken to Penang and coerced into s*x work.
The victim managed to escape and traveled to Kuala Lumpur, where she sought assistance from the Nigerian embassy before filing a police report.
The suspects are currently under a seven-day remand beginning December 1, as authorities investigate under Section 12 of Malaysia’s Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act (Atipsom) 2007.
Initial findings reveal that three of the Nigerian suspects entered Malaysia on tourist visas in January and had been renting the house where the victim was confined.
The alleged syndicate reportedly charged between RM150 and RM500 for s*x services at entertainment venues, further underscoring the severity of the exploitation.
The case has sparked renewed attention to the dangers of human trafficking and the need for vigilance when addressing scams targeting vulnerable individuals. Malaysian authorities are continuing their investigation to dismantle the syndicate and bring those responsible to justice.
