Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson to Make Broadway Debut in Musical & Juliet

Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court, is about to fulfill a lifelong ambition. This Saturday, the 54-year-old justice will step onto a Broadway stage for a one-night performance of the hit musical & Juliet.

Jackson will join the cast in an ensemble role during the 8 PM ET show, followed by a special post-performance discussion with the audience. Her appearance realizes a dream she first articulated in her Harvard University application essay, as highlighted in her memoir, Lovely One.

Producers of & Juliet commemorated the moment on Instagram, referencing Jackson’s teenage fantasy of blending her passions for law and the arts. The production expressed excitement about helping "make that teenage dream come true."

The musical offers a contemporary twist on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, reimagining Juliet's fate with a modern and empowering storyline. It features a soundtrack packed with pop hits by artists like Britney Spears and Katy Perry.

Jackson’s love for theater is no secret. In her memoir, she recounted competing in dramatic speech orations during her time at Harvard. She also performed a one-woman scene during an October press tour for the public radio program Notes from America. Earlier, in September, she sang excerpts from The Wiz at the Apollo Theater.

Jackson has even shared a Harvard stage with Hollywood star Matt Damon, humorously noting that her performance earned higher praise from their professor.

While details of her role in & Juliet remain limited, it has been reported that a unique ensemble spot was created specifically for her.

Jackson’s Broadway debut marks another historic moment in her trailblazing career. Appointed in 2022, she became the first Black woman to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court, inspiring generations with her achievements both in and beyond the judiciary.

This performance is a testament to Jackson’s multidimensional talents, reminding audiences that even the most accomplished individuals continue to chase dreams and embrace new challenges.
