Kentucky Judge Shot by Sheriff Allegedly Involved in Sex-for-Favors Scheme

A shocking and sordid case has emerged in Kentucky, where District Court Judge Kevin Mullins was fatally shot in his chambers by local sheriff Shawn "Mickey" Stines. The shooting, which occurred on September 19, was captured on a surveillance camera and has since sparked a broader investigation into Mullins' alleged involvement in a sex-for-favors scheme.

According to statements from a lawyer, Mullins, 54, was allegedly running a "brothel" out of his courtroom, where women on house arrest were reportedly exchanging sexual acts for special treatment in the judicial system. These claims come to light following a series of audio recordings obtained by NewsNation, which link Mullins to a scandal involving sextortion and illegal sexual activities.

The audio, which is part of a criminal investigation into former Letcher County deputy sheriff Ben Fields—who was convicted earlier this year for rape and sodomy of a female inmate—includes statements from Sabrina Adkins, a defendant who had been placed on house arrest. Adkins claims to have witnessed videotapes showing Mullins engaging in sexual acts with women in exchange for leniency, including granting bail to inmates. The tapes, she alleges, were filmed in the judge's chambers.

Adkins, who had filed a federal lawsuit against Fields for the alleged abuse, recognized the chambers in the videos. She stated that the recordings also featured Stines and other "higher-ups" participating in these illicit activities, with the intention of granting favorable treatment to those involved.

Stines, 43, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder for the fatal shooting of Mullins, with new charges of murdering a public official added in November. Stines has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges. The two men had been friends for about three decades, and Stines had been deposed in an ongoing case related to Fields just days before the killing occurred.

Adkins' attorney, Ned Pillersdorf, expressed his shock at the disturbing nature of the revelations, stating, "It's like they were running a brothel out of that courtroom."

The investigation into the case continues, as authorities delve deeper into the connections between the judge, sheriff, and the alleged criminal activities within the Letcher County court system.
