A Brazilian man who lost his genitals after a violent act of revenge by his wife has expressed hope that surgeons can restore his manhood through a prosthetic implant. Gilberto Nogueira de Oliveira, 40, shared his ordeal and aspirations for recovery in a candid interview nearly a year after the harrowing incident.
Gilberto’s wife, Daiane, attacked him in December 2023 in their Sao Paulo home after luring him to bed with promises of intimate role-play. She tied him up, then used a razor to sever his penis, later flushing it down the toilet to prevent reattachment.
The assault, which Daiane claimed was motivated by her husband’s infidelity, resulted in her being sentenced to nearly five years in prison.
Now a food delivery driver, Gilberto has been navigating life without his genitals. He described his new reality, saying:
"My routine is almost normal. The part that isn’t normal is the sexual aspect. First, because I am without my partner, and second, I don’t have the equipment. But my social life, work, and other aspects are normal."
Despite the physical trauma, he revealed that he can still experience arousal and has found ways to cope, using the opening he urinates from for self-pleasure.
Gilberto has been gifted a lifelike prosthetic penis and is optimistic that a surgical team might perform the procedure to attach it at no cost, as he lacks the funds for the operation.
However, medical experts caution that while a prosthetic can restore the appearance of his manhood, it will not replicate its natural function.
In a twist that has baffled many, Gilberto has reconciled with Daiane, despite the life-altering attack. Through a series of love letters, the estranged couple has reconnected emotionally, and Gilberto now visits her regularly in prison.
Judicial authorities have denied his request for conjugal visits, citing his status as the victim of her crime. Visits are restricted to interactions through a security glass screen.
Gilberto described his feelings during these meetings:
"The feeling I experience when visiting her is joy and happiness. I can also see happiness on her face. Our desire is to embrace and kiss, but that is not possible at the moment."
Gilberto’s story highlights the resilience of the human spirit amid unimaginable adversity. As he continues to hope for surgical intervention and a fresh start, his journey remains a testament to the complexities of forgiveness and the pursuit of normalcy after trauma.
