The Federal Government of Nigeria has significantly bolstered the Nigerian Army's operational capacity by acquiring 43 Bayraktar TB2 drones, aiming to enhance counterinsurgency efforts in the North-West region. Brigadier General U.G. Ogeleka, Commander of the Nigerian Army Space Command, announced this development during a ceremony in Abuja, where newly trained personnel were officially inducted to operate and maintain the cutting-edge drones.
This initiative, termed Project Guardian, forms a critical component of Nigeria’s strategy to address insurgency and security challenges. As part of the project, a select team comprising 35 officers and 11 soldiers underwent specialized training in Turkey between May and September 2022. The comprehensive program equipped them with skills in piloting multi-piloted aircraft, mission operations, avionics, mechanical engineering, and technical maintenance.
Of the 46 personnel trained, 14 are now certified as multi-piloted aircraft pilots, seven as mission operators, and 23 as engineers and technicians. At the winging ceremony, Brigadier General Ogeleka noted that 22 of these experts were present, with the remainder actively engaged in field operations.
The deployment of Bayraktar TB2 drones highlights the Nigerian Army’s commitment to leveraging advanced technology to combat terrorism and improve security in vulnerable regions. The drones, renowned for their precision and versatility, will play a pivotal role in surveillance, intelligence gathering, and targeted operations.
This technological advancement signals a significant step in modernizing Nigeria’s defense capabilities and underscores the government’s resolve to address evolving security threats effectively.
