A Southwest Airlines flight and a private jet recently had a close call at Chicago Midway International Airport, highlighting the importance of safety in the aviation industry. The incident occurred on a Tuesday morning when Southwest Flight 2504, arriving from Omaha, Nebraska, was instructed to land. However, the flight crew was forced to perform a go-around to avoid a potential collision with a Bombardier Challenger 350 private jet that had entered the runway without proper authorization.
Around 8:50 a.m. local time, as Southwest Flight 2504 was preparing to land, air traffic control directed the private jet to follow a specific route on the tarmac. However, the pilot of the jet mistakenly misunderstood the instructions, prompting an immediate response from air traffic control to correct the course. This prompted the Southwest flight crew to act quickly and initiate a go-around maneuver, climbing to a safe altitude of 3,000 feet.
Despite the close encounter, Southwest Airlines confirmed that the flight landed safely without incident. The airline emphasized the importance of adhering to safety procedures and reiterated that the safety of their passengers and employees remains their top priority. In response to the situation, the private jet operator, Flexjet, acknowledged the event and is currently gathering more information about the incident.
Flight data revealed that the two aircraft came within approximately 2,050 feet of each other before the Southwest plane initiated the go-around. The private jet had been instructed to hold short of Runway 31C, but the miscommunication between air traffic control and the jet’s pilot led to the close call.
Both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the incident. This event comes amid an ongoing review of several recent aviation safety concerns. Between January 2023 and September 2024, the NTSB investigated multiple runway incursions, underscoring the ongoing attention to aviation safety measures.
For travelers and aviation enthusiasts, this event serves as a reminder of the importance of clear communication, quick decision-making, and strict adherence to safety protocols to ensure the safety of all individuals in the skies.
