Nigerian-Born Professor Bolu Ogunyemi Makes History as President of Canadian Medical Association

Bolu Ogunyemi, a Nigerian-born dermatologist and clinical associate professor, has been elected as the first Black president of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) in its 158-year history. Ogunyemi’s groundbreaking election represents a significant milestone in the association’s history and reflects his extensive contributions to medicine and healthcare leadership in Canada.

Ogunyemi, who practices dermatology in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, and teaches at Memorial University of Newfoundland, secured the position after defeating Susan MacDonald. As president, he will act as the CMA's primary representative in discussions with government agencies, medical associations, and partner organizations throughout Canada.

Before his election, Ogunyemi served as the inaugural assistant dean of social accountability at Memorial University from 2020 to 2023. He is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Labrador Medical Association. In 2024, he completed a fellowship in health services improvement at the University of Alberta’s School of Public Health.

As CMA president-elect, Ogunyemi pledged to leverage his 15 years of medical leadership experience to address challenges within the Canadian healthcare system.

"My track record in medical leadership has equipped me with the expertise to tackle pressing healthcare issues," Ogunyemi said. "As CMA president-elect, I will advocate for a unified and respected profession, a robust healthcare system, and healthier communities."

While Ogunyemi will serve as CMA president-elect pending the formal approval of the association’s general council in May 2025, his one-year term as president is set to commence immediately after this confirmation.

This historic election not only celebrates Ogunyemi's achievements but also highlights the CMA's commitment to fostering diversity and addressing systemic challenges within Canada's healthcare system. Ogunyemi’s presidency is anticipated to bring fresh perspectives to healthcare leadership and community advocacy.
