Queen Camilla Calls for Continued Efforts to End Violence Against Women After 50 Years

 

The UK’s Queen Consort, Camilla, has expressed disappointment that violence against women remains a persistent issue, despite decades of advocacy and progress. Speaking at a charity event commemorating the 50th anniversary of Women’s Aid, Camilla called it “terrible” that domestic abuse has not been eradicated after half a century.

The event, held at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in Westminster, London, brought together survivors of domestic abuse, charity representatives, and public figures. Among the attendees were acid attack survivor and presenter Katie Piper, DJ Ashley James, and "Loose Women" star Kéllé Bryan.

During her address, the Queen Consort praised Women’s Aid for its impactful work over the years, stating:

“I cannot believe it was 50 years ago when you started. You would think what is happening now compared to what was happening 50 years ago. You should all be so incredibly proud of yourselves. I think so many people hadn’t realised what domestic abuse was, especially then.”

While commending the progress made, Camilla acknowledged the persistent challenges, saying:

“It is terrible that after 50 years, it still has not been eradicated, but we are making progress. I’ve talked to many, many women—and men—all around the world, and you hear the same devastating stories time and time again.”

The Queen Consort also referenced her efforts to raise awareness through her work, including the ITV documentary "Her Majesty The Queen: Behind Closed Doors," which sheds light on domestic and sexual violence.

In her closing remarks, Camilla emphasized the importance of survivor voices in inspiring others to seek help, stating:

“We all need to pool together. Hearing the voices is so important because every time another survivor hears a voice, it spurs them perhaps to get up. We’re putting an end to it—probably not in my lifetime, maybe during some of yours, but we will see an end to it.”

Camilla concluded her visit by cutting a cake presented by Nikki Bradley, Women’s Aid’s Director of Services, and accepting a bouquet of flowers gifted by the organization. Her heartfelt message reinforced her unwavering commitment to combating domestic violence and supporting survivors worldwide.
