Family members of Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, have shared details about their unexpected discovery of a familial connection—and the reaction they received when reaching out to their high-profile relative.
Marshall Robinson, 86, and his sister Shane, who reside in the coastal town of Fleetwood in Lancashire, recently uncovered their connection to Musk while researching their family tree. They discovered that they are second cousins to the billionaire, sharing great-grandparents with him.
Marshall’s grandfather, Kenneth Robinson, was the brother of Musk’s grandmother, Cora Amelia Robinson. Born in Mossley Hill, Liverpool, in 1923, Cora later moved to South Africa with her husband Walter Musk, where they raised a family, including Elon’s father, Errol Musk.
When one member of the family sent a message to Musk on social media, his terse reply was simply: “What do you want?” This brief response left the family feeling less than welcomed by their famous relative.
“I’ve never been in touch, but one of the family did,” Marshall confirmed. “That was the response we got.”
Marshall, who once met Elon’s father during his time in the merchant navy, expressed mixed feelings about his renowned cousin. “I think he’s stupid with all the things he comes out with,” he remarked.
Shane, while more diplomatic, noted that Musk has shown no apparent interest in his extended family. She decided against contacting him herself, stating she doubted he would be interested in hearing from his “poor relations.”
Despite the lack of familial warmth, Marshall and Shane were intrigued by their newfound connection. Marshall noted the historical link between the Musk family name and their Scottish ancestry, expressing surprise at their indirect connection to global influence, including ties to the White House through Musk’s prominence.
Shane recalled meeting their great-aunt Cora during a visit to the UK two decades ago, when she was accompanied by Elon’s brother, Kimbal Musk.
While the discovery has sparked curiosity and some excitement within the Robinson family, it seems their relationship with Musk will likely remain distant.
