A small aircraft crash in Gramado, a popular tourist destination in southern Brazil, claimed the lives of at least nine people on Sunday morning, December 22. The plane went down in a commercial area of the city, causing extensive damage and sparking a fire.
The Piper Cheyenne 400 turboprop struck a building’s chimney, collided with the second floor of a residential house, and ultimately crashed into a furniture store. An inn nearby also sustained damage, according to the Rio Grande do Sul state security secretariat.
“There are nine confirmed fatalities, and there are no survivors,” Cleber dos Santos Lima, director of the Interior Police Department, told AFP.
Authorities initially estimated 10 people were on board the plane, though the exact number of passengers and crew remains unconfirmed.
At least 15 individuals were transported to local hospitals, primarily for smoke inhalation resulting from the fire ignited by the crash. Firefighters and emergency personnel worked swiftly to control the blaze and provide aid to affected residents and businesses.
The ill-fated flight had departed from Canela, another tourist hotspot in Rio Grande do Sul. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with aviation authorities examining the wreckage and flight records for clues.
Gramado, known for its bustling Christmas season and festive attractions, was shaken by the tragic incident. The city draws large numbers of visitors during the holidays, making the crash’s location in a busy commercial area particularly devastating.
Authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage while offering support to those impacted by the tragedy. The investigation aims to uncover the events leading to the crash and prevent similar incidents in the future.
