Stan Alieke, the lawyer representing Nigerian singer Speed Darlington, has expressed concern over the continued detention of his client three weeks after his re-arrest. Speaking during a live chat, Alieke disclosed that the singer's arraignment has been scheduled for January 15, 2025, raising questions about why the police have refused to grant him bail.
According to Alieke, the prolonged detention means Speed Darlington will spend both Christmas and New Year holidays at the IRT detention center in Abuja, commonly referred to as "Abattoir." He noted that the police have the authority to grant administrative bail but have chosen not to do so.
"I’m surprised that the police are refusing to release him on bail, even though they have the power to do so," Alieke said. He suggested that the refusal might be connected to allegations of bribery that Speed Darlington previously made against the police.
The singer’s current legal troubles stem from a petition filed by fellow artist Burna Boy, accusing Speed Darlington of defamation.
The delay in resolving the case and the upcoming arraignment date have sparked criticism, with Alieke urging the authorities to consider the implications of extended detention without bail. Fans and supporters of Speed Darlington have also voiced their frustrations online, demanding justice and accountability.
As the legal proceedings drag on, the singer's future remains uncertain, with many questioning the motivations behind the prolonged detention.
