Storm Darragh Causes Widespread Power Outages and Travel Disruptions Across the UK

Tens of thousands of residents across the UK faced power outages on Saturday morning as Storm Darragh unleashed powerful winds and heavy rain, creating significant pre-Christmas chaos. The Met Office issued a rare red weather alert for high winds, covering parts of Wales and southwest England, urging people to stay indoors. The government also activated its emergency alert system, sending warning messages to approximately three million phones in affected areas on Friday night.

Wind speeds nearing 90 mph lashed western Wales and northwest England, with dramatic waves pounding coastal areas like Porthcawl. Over 50,000 homes in Wales alone were left without power, while nationwide outages impacted 86,000 properties across England, Scotland, and Wales, according to the Energy Networks Association.

The storm, the fourth named this season, caused significant disruptions to travel. Train services on Wales’ northern coast were suspended due to fallen trees, and several bridges in southern England and Wales were closed for safety. In Northern Ireland, thousands of homes experienced power outages, and numerous bus and train services were either delayed or canceled. Dublin Airport also reported widespread flight cancellations, with over 400,000 homes in Ireland experiencing power cuts.

The storm impacted several public events, including the postponement of the Premier League Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton. Christmas markets across various regions were also canceled. An amber weather warning, signaling potential risks to life and property, remains active for large parts of the UK and Northern Ireland until Saturday evening.

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds described the storm as a "challenging situation" and urged those receiving emergency alerts to follow safety advice. The Met Office has issued over 100 flood warnings and cautioned against the risk of additional power outages and travel delays over the weekend.

Storm Darragh follows closely behind Storm Bert, which caused severe flooding and power outages just two weeks ago. As communities begin recovery efforts, emergency services and local authorities remain on high alert, providing assistance to those affected and closely monitoring weather developments.

The UK continues to brace for further disruptions as the storm moves through, leaving a trail of damage during one of the busiest times of the year.
