The Federal Government has confirmed that the recently identified XEC COVID-19 variant, which has been detected in Australia and parts of Europe, has not been reported in Nigeria.
Kachollum Daju, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, addressed public concerns following the leak of an official letter urging precautionary measures. She emphasized that the communication was not meant to alarm citizens but to ensure readiness.
In a letter dated December 5, 2024, the Federal Ministry of Health directed hospitals to enhance alert systems and maintain vigilance for patients exhibiting COVID-like symptoms. Signed by Dr. O.N. Anuma, Head of the Teaching Hospital Division, the letter encouraged collaboration with stakeholders to monitor the situation and share critical data about the variant.
"I am directed to inform you of a newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant, which has been reported in Australia and has already spread to 29 countries globally. You may wish to know that this variant has shown a growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health," the letter stated.
With the festive season in full swing and increased travel activity, Daju stressed the importance of vigilance to prevent the introduction of the variant into Nigeria. "We are taking proactive measures to ensure our health system is not caught off guard," she stated, highlighting the need for heightened monitoring protocols in healthcare facilities nationwide.
The XEC variant has reportedly demonstrated a growth advantage over other COVID-19 strains, raising concerns about its potential impact. However, the Federal Government reassured citizens that no cases have been recorded in the country.
Authorities continue to monitor global developments while urging Nigerians to adhere to standard health protocols to safeguard public health during the holiday season.
