Steve Mensch, the president and general manager of studio operations at Tyler Perry Studios, tragically died in a plane crash on Friday night, December 6, at the age of 62. The crash occurred in Homosassa, Florida, about 60 miles north of Tampa, and involved a single-engine Vans RV-12IS aircraft registered to Mensch's home address in Fayetteville, Georgia.
Florida Highway Patrol officers discovered the wreckage near the intersection of Highway 19 and Longfellow Street. Photos from the scene showed the aircraft upside down on a road. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched an investigation into the incident.
In a heartfelt statement, Tyler Perry Studios confirmed Mensch's passing. “We are incredibly saddened by the passing of our dear friend Steve Mensch," the statement read. "Steve was a cherished member of our team for more than eight years and well-beloved in the Atlanta community. It's hard to imagine not seeing him smiling throughout the halls. We will miss him dearly. Our heart goes out to his family as we all send them our prayers."
Mensch, who was piloting the aircraft at the time of the crash, was remembered for his passion for flying and his pivotal role at the studio. Tyler Perry himself expressed his grief in an Instagram post, writing, "I've been trying to understand this tragedy all day—what went wrong with that plane. I'm praying for his family as we all try to make sense of this heartbreak."
