In the fervent pursuit of Biafran independence, there invariably emerges a figure of inspiration, whose dedication to the cause is met with the shadow of baseless accusations, branding them as agents of the very entity they oppose— Nigeria.
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the visionary leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been subjected to such calumnies. Accused first of being a pawn of the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and when those allegations crumbled under scrutiny, swiftly rebranded as an agent of the All Progressives Congress (APC) employed by Muhammadu Buhari. His ordeal was punctuated by widespread protests at embassies, demanding his arrest and extradition. Yet, in 2021, after Kanu's kidnap, torture and extraordinary rendition from Kenya back to Nigeria, in a remarkable turn of events in October 2022, the Nigerian Appeal Court quashed all charges against him. This legal victory was, however, tainted by a fresh wave of propaganda, with critics like David Hundeyin suggesting his release was a strategic move by the APC to thwart the presidential aspirations and victory of Mr. Peter Obi.
The Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE) Prime Minister Simon Ekpa too, found himself ensnared in this web of mistrust. Accused of being in the employ of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with claims of being bribed with millions of US dollars to undermine the Biafran movement. These accusations were not solely the work of those advocating for a unified Nigeria; rather, they were also propagated by certain elements within the Biafran movement itself especially from the camp of IPOB-Nigeria DOS and their media defenders especially Emeka Gift, Elochukwu Nicholas Ohagi, Patrick Ikem Chronicle and Chika Austine , perhaps in an attempt to sow discord. The narrative was intensified during Nigeria's last general elections, with David Hundeyin once again accusing Ekpa of being an agent of Tinubu, leading to an online petition to Finnish authorities for his arrest and extradition.
Now, the accusatory gaze shifts to Dr. Ngozi Ezeobika Orabueze , who is now accused of conspiring with Nigerian agents to dismantle the Biafran agitation. In a twist of irony, those who once defended our Prime Minister Simon Ekpa against such accusations now spearhead the campaign against Orabueze. Sunny Akparawa ( SUNNY MEDIA) once a vocal advocate for Ekpa, now leads the calumny campaign against the USB Chief-of-Staff cum Deputy Prime Minister Dr Ngozi Orabueze, showcasing the cyclical nature of these allegations.
It seems almost a rite of passage within this struggle for there to be one who is accused of betraying the cause to serve the interests of Nigeria. Yet, history has taught us that time, the great arbiter of truth, has a way of exonerating the just. It cleared the name of our indefatigable supreme leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, it also unmistakably absolved Ekpa, and one can only anticipate it will do the same for Dr. Ngozi Orabueze.
Thus, as these accusations echo through the corridors of this passionate quest for self-determination, let them not strike you with shock. Recognize them as part of an established pattern, and hold faith that in due time, the truth will emerge, illuminating the integrity of those truly committed to the Biafran dream.
