North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has issued a rare public reprimand to dozens of party officials for misconduct related to a "drinking spree," according to state media reports.
During a recent meeting of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), Kim criticized officials from Onchon and Usi counties, where factories are under construction as part of the "Regional Development 20×10 Policy," an initiative aimed at modernizing rural areas.
Seoul-based news outlet NK News reported that major ceremonies were recently held in these counties to mark the opening of factories producing clothing, food, and other goods. However, in Onchon, a coastal region in western North Korea, over 40 officials allegedly engaged in improper behavior by participating in a "group drinking spree," as reported by state-run KCNA.
According to a report cited by KCNA, senior WPK officials condemned the incident, stating, "Never before in the history of our party has such reckless conduct occurred. The collective drinking and delinquent behavior... stand in direct opposition to the party's principles of discipline."
While details of the misconduct in Usi, located in southwestern North Korea, remain unclear, the KCNA report referenced unspecified "anti-people crimes" committed against local residents.
Addressing the WPK meeting, Kim warned that such actions threaten the unity between the party and the people. "Those who abuse their power and engage in bureaucratic practices in local regions are attempting to undermine the sacred bond between the party and the people," he stated. "This is a grave crime that our party, our people, our system, and our laws can never tolerate."
