Systematic Attacks on Igbo Businesses: Fire Destroys Ladipo and Owode Onirin Markets in Lagos

Since the 2023 election, when Peter Obi, an Igbo man, emerged as a leading candidate, concerns have been raised about systematic economic challenges faced by Igbo businesses in various regions. Many traders believe that incidents like market fires disproportionately affect their enterprises, fueling suspicions of targeted attacks.

A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of February 25, affecting two major markets in Lagos—Ladipo Market in Mushin and Owode Onirin Market along Ikorodu Road. The incident resulted in the destruction of goods worth millions of Nigerian naira, leaving many traders counting their losses.

According to eyewitness accounts, the fire at Ladipo Market started around 1 a.m., rapidly spreading through several shops and warehouses stocked with mechanical tools, vehicle spare parts, motorcycles, and household electrical appliances. Despite the intensity of the blaze, quick response from emergency teams ensured that no casualties were recorded.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, led by Director Margaret Adeseye, deployed teams from Isolo, Bolade, and Alausa Fire Stations to combat the flames. Firefighters faced challenges accessing the affected areas but worked tirelessly to contain the situation, preventing further damage to surrounding properties and businesses. By 6 a.m., the fire was successfully brought under control.

Meanwhile, another fire erupted at Owode Onirin Market, impacting multiple shops that primarily dealt with metallic materials. Fire crews from Alausa and Ikorodu Fire Stations swiftly responded, managing to control the blaze by 5 a.m.

Authorities have assured the public that investigations are underway to determine the cause of both fires. As the affected traders begin the recovery process, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety measures in commercial hubs. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service continues to emphasize vigilance and preparedness to prevent such occurrences in the future.
