After ‘The Closer’ Backlash, Chappelle’s Pandemic Doc Finds New Life

Dave Chappelle premiered his documentary Dave Chappelle: Live In Real Life at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival on Friday, marking a fresh debut after its original release was derailed by backlash to his 2021 Netflix special The Closer. That special, which included jokes about transgender people, sparked protests from LGBTQ+ advocates and Netflix employees.

The documentary captures Chappelle’s 2020 outdoor comedy shows in Yellow Springs, Ohio—produced under strict COVID-19 protocols with appearances from stars like David Letterman, Chris Rock, and Kevin Hart. Chappelle reflected on the courage it took for performers to gather during the pandemic, noting the joy of reconnecting after months of isolation. The shows also generated $9 million for the small town’s economy.

The screening doubled as a fundraiser for Chappelle’s alma mater, the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, D.C., which he credits for giving him a vital sense of community during his youth.
