The Trump administration’s latest attempt to close the book on the Jeffrey Epstein saga has been blocked. On Monday, U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer rejected a Justice Department request to unseal grand jury materials from the prosecution of Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell, calling the motion “disingenuous” and more about political distraction than transparency.
Engelmayer noted that such records are rarely released and that the Maxwell files were redundant to evidence already presented at trial. His decision comes amid MAGA base pressure for the release of a rumored “Epstein client list” — which the DOJ recently said does not exist — and growing criticism over Trump’s ties to Epstein.
The administration has recently shifted focus to Maxwell, transferring her to a low-security prison and floating the possibility of a pardon, while she appeals to the Supreme Court. Right-wing influencers have accused Democrats and Obama-appointed judges of shielding the truth, but much of the fallout has been eclipsed by Trump’s controversial move to send the National Guard to D.C., which critics see as another diversion from the Epstein controversy.
