This move follows TxDOT’s October 2024 takeover of SH 288 operations, aimed at lowering tolls, improving road maintenance, and fast-tracking future upgrades. As part of the changes, a portion of toll revenue will fund two new free lanes—one in each direction—between I-610 and Beltway 8, easing congestion and improving commute times.
Governor Greg Abbott praised the decision, citing it as part of broader efforts to cut costs for Texans and expand free lanes. TxDOT leaders emphasized that the agency is not only reducing tolls but also restoring $1.7 billion to the state highway fund, ensuring other statewide infrastructure projects stay on track.
Toll rates will still vary based on time of day, day of the week, and vehicle type, with changes possible every 30 minutes to manage traffic flow. Although TxDOT now sets the rates, billing and customer support will continue to be handled by the Harris County Toll Road Authority.
The 10+ mile stretch from I-69 to the Harris-Brazoria County line marks the focus of this toll cut, delivering meaningful relief and paving the way for more free lanes in the future.
