“James Comey’s Son-in-Law Resigns Minutes After Ex-FBI Chief’s Indictment”

James Comey’s indictment on Thursday sent shockwaves not only through Washington but also through his own family. Minutes after the former FBI director was charged, his son-in-law, Troy Edwards, resigned from his high-ranking post as a federal prosecutor in Virginia’s Eastern District.

Edwards, who served as deputy chief of the National Security Section — a role overseeing some of the country’s most sensitive espionage cases involving the Pentagon and CIA — submitted a blunt one-sentence letter to acting U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan. “To uphold my oath to the Constitution and the country,” he wrote, before walking away from a prestigious career.

Edwards had built a reputation as one of the Justice Department’s rising stars. He was part of the team that won convictions against Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes and others for their violent Jan. 6 plot to keep Donald Trump in power. But on Thursday night, he was in the courtroom gallery, watching as his wife’s father was indicted for lying to Congress — charges Trump had openly demanded just days earlier.

Halligan, a Trump ally with no prior prosecutorial experience, rushed the case to a grand jury before the five-year statute of limitations expired. She took over the office only after her predecessor resigned under pressure from Trump for refusing to bring cases against Trump’s political enemies, including New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Comey, fired by Trump in 2017, said after the indictment that he was innocent and welcomed his day in court: “I have great confidence in the federal judicial system.”

The family fallout has been striking. Edwards’ resignation comes just two months after the Justice Department abruptly fired Comey’s daughter, Maurene Comey, a veteran prosecutor in the Southern District of New York, without explanation. She has since filed a lawsuit alleging her termination was politically motivated and unconstitutional.

With one daughter suing to get her job back and a son-in-law walking away in protest, the Comey family’s entanglement with Trump’s Justice Department is becoming its own story — one that underscores how personal and political battles at the highest levels of government are colliding in extraordinary ways.
