Tekashi 6ix9ine Placed on Home Detention After Florida Mall Fight

Rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine, born Daniel Hernandez, has been placed on home detention following a fight at a Florida mall that violated his probation, according to the Southern District of New York. Hernandez, who has a long history of legal battles, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor battery specification stemming from the August 8 incident.

Court records show Hernandez and another person allegedly kicked and punched a third individual without legal justification. Prosecutors requested that Hernandez be jailed pending his Nov. 4 sentencing, which also involves two counts of misdemeanor drug possession he admitted to in July.

Instead, Judge Paul A. Engelmayer ordered home detention with electronic monitoring, a decision Hernandez’s attorney, Lance Lazzaro, called appropriate given that his client is still pending sentencing. Lazzaro stressed that Hernandez did not initiate the fight, which began after a man threatened him, accused him of being a snitch, and taunted him over his past cooperation with the government against the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods gang.

Hernandez has a long and complicated criminal history. In 2019, he was sentenced to two years in prison for racketeering, connected to his role in gang-directed violence. He was released early in 2020 due to health concerns related to chronic asthma and COVID-19. Since then, he has faced multiple probation violations, including drug possession and violating supervised release conditions, often resulting in brief stints of jail, home incarceration, or electronic monitoring.

Despite these legal troubles, Hernandez maintains that many of the confrontations he faces are provoked, noting that the Florida mall fight occurred while he was simply with his family and being harassed by someone citing his past as a government witness.
