A Harris County courtroom turned chaotic Friday when James Paul Anderson, 39, who was set to accept a plea deal for allegedly murdering his wife, suffered a sudden medical emergency and died, authorities confirmed.
Anderson was charged with killing his wife, Victoria Lynn Anderson, 34, in 2023. He was out on a $300,000 bond and scheduled to enter a plea that would have resulted in a 35-year prison sentence.
According to witnesses, Anderson asked for a moment alone before returning to court. Shortly afterward, he spat into a trash can, began vomiting, and collapsed. Video obtained by KHOU showed Anderson being wheeled out on a gurney. Court bailiffs administered naloxone, a medication used to reverse overdoses, before Houston Fire Department first responders transported him to a nearby hospital. He was pronounced dead at 11:05 a.m., the Harris County District Attorney’s Office said.
The murder case had shocked the Houston community. Anderson, a public school special education teacher, allegedly shot his wife while she was on the phone with 911, pleading that her husband threatened to kill her. Their 3-year-old son was present in the home at the time. Dispatchers reportedly heard a gunshot during the call.
Police arrived at the Northeast Houston home on Vista Ridge Drive and negotiated for hours before Anderson surrendered. Officers found Victoria Anderson unresponsive with a gunshot wound; paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.
An autopsy by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences is pending, and investigators are looking into the circumstances surrounding James Anderson’s death in court.
