Trump Mocks Modi Accent, Claims Credit for Halting India-Pakistan Conflict

During the latest leg of his week-long Asia tour, President Donald Trump drew criticism for slipping into an imitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s accent while praising the leader at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Gyeongju, South Korea.

“He’s a killer! He’s tough as hell!” Trump declared, before launching into a booming, exaggerated imitation: “No, we will fight!”

Trump lauded Modi’s appearance and toughness, before claiming credit for ending a four-day India-Pakistan skirmish earlier this year, which had briefly raised fears of a nuclear confrontation. According to Trump, his threat of 250 percent tariffs on both nations forced the two sides to stop fighting within 48 hours.

“Do you think [Joe] Biden would have done that? I don’t think so,” he told the audience.

However, Indian sources have rejected Trump’s claims, noting that Modi had avoided interaction with him at a preceding summit in Malaysia, making the president’s account of events highly dubious.

Public Reaction

Social media responses were overwhelmingly negative. Indian journalist Shubhangi Sharma commented: “There’s no making sense of things with Mr Trump.” Other critics called the speech “insanity on international display” and “verbal diarrhea,” while some speculated about his mental state during the address.

Beyond the mockery, observers expressed concern over Trump’s continued insistence on taking credit for global events and invoking Joe Biden, despite the former president no longer holding office.

The episode underscores the awkward and often controversial nature of Trump’s foreign diplomacy, drawing attention to his tendency to exaggerate personal influence on international crises.
