Ken Paxton Sues Texas School District for Refusing to Display Ten Commandments, Weeks After Wife Cites “Biblical Grounds” for Divorce

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) has filed a lawsuit against the Galveston Independent School District for refusing to display the Ten Commandments in classrooms, as required under a new state law.

“I sued Galveston ISD after it refused to display the Ten Commandments in classrooms,” Paxton announced Friday on social media. “By refusing to follow the law, Galveston ISD chose to both blatantly ignore the Legislature and also ignore the legal and moral heritage of our nation.”

The mandate stems from Senate Bill 10, which requires every public school classroom in Texas to display the Ten Commandments beginning with the 2025–2026 academic year. Civil liberties organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union, have filed lawsuits challenging the law as a violation of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, which prohibits government endorsement of religion.

Paxton’s lawsuit comes just months after his wife, Texas state Sen. Angela Paxton (R), filed for divorce citing “biblical grounds.” In a July social media post, she wrote that she was ending their 38-year marriage due to adultery — a violation of the Seventh Commandment, “Thou shalt not commit adultery.”

“After 38 years of marriage, I filed for divorce on biblical grounds,” Angela Paxton said. “I have earnestly pursued reconciliation, but in light of recent discoveries, I do not believe it honors God or is loving to remain in the marriage.”

Ken Paxton acknowledged the split on X, saying the couple had decided to “start a new chapter” after “countless political attacks and public scrutiny.”

The attorney general remains one of Texas’s most controversial political figures, facing ongoing legal and ethical battles while continuing to assert his commitment to what he calls “Texas values.”
