Russia Offers Military Support to Venezuela as U.S. Tensions Rise

Venezuela is turning to Russia for help amid rising concerns about U.S. military activity in the Caribbean. President Nicolás Maduro recently asked Moscow for critical support, including repairs for fighter jets, radar upgrades, and delivery of missile units.

Russia responded quickly. Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Moscow is ready to help under existing agreements and urged all sides to avoid actions that could escalate the situation. Russian officials also hinted that Venezuela could receive advanced missile systems if requested.

The request came after the U.S. increased its presence in the Caribbean, sending warships, fighter jets, and conducting strikes on vessels allegedly linked to drug cartels. Maduro has described these moves as an “escalating threat” and warned that Venezuela is ready to defend itself.

Russia and Venezuela already signed a strategic partnership earlier this year, covering arms, energy, and diplomatic coordination. Zakharova stressed that any military support will follow the rules of these agreements.

The situation keeps the Caribbean on high alert. U.S. forces are likely to stay in the region, while Moscow evaluates what support it can provide without stretching its resources, especially given its ongoing war in Ukraine.

The coming weeks will show whether Russia steps up its military assistance and how the U.S. responds to this growing tension in the region.
