Sowore Alleges Secret Plan to Sentence Nnamdi Kanu to Death or Life Imprisonment

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has alleged that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has already reached a secret decision regarding the fate of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on November 5, 2025, Sowore claimed that a “high-level political conspiracy” has been devised to either sentence Kanu to death or condemn him to life imprisonment, suggesting that the outcome has been predetermined “far in advance” and is merely being presented as judicial procedure.

Justice James Omotosho is expected to conclude Kanu’s trial by declaring that his refusal to open his defence amounts to an admission of guilt, a convenient interpretation designed to seal a verdict already agreed upon behind closed doors,” Sowore wrote.

The activist drew parallels between the current situation and the 1995 execution of environmentalist Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni activists, describing it as a “haunting historical precedent.”

“It was in November 1995 that the military tribunal of General Sani Abacha sentenced Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni activists to death... Today, three decades later, Nigeria appears to be standing at the same moral crossroads,” he added.

Sowore concluded by asserting that the trial of Nnamdi Kanu is no longer about justice but a test of Nigeria’s moral conscience, urging citizens to speak out against what he described as political persecution.

The Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian presidency have not issued an official response to Sowore’s claims as of the time of this report.
