Trump Dubs Newsom “Slimy Newscum” as California Republicans Sue Over Redistricting Vote

Miami, FL — President Donald Trump unveiled a new nickname for California Governor Gavin Newsom on Wednesday, calling him “Slimy Newscum” during remarks at the America Business Forum in Miami.

Trump’s quip came hours after California Republicans filed a lawsuit challenging Proposition 50, a measure voters approved on Tuesday allowing the state to redraw congressional district boundaries. The lawsuit claims the legislature violated the Constitution by creating districts based on race to favor Hispanic voters, without sufficient justification.

Governor Newsom responded on X, writing, “You lost,” and dismissed the suit: “We haven’t reviewed the lawsuit, but if it’s from the California Republican Party and Harmeet Dhillon’s law firm, it’s going to fail. Good luck, losers.” Dhillon is a former Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the Department of Justice and no longer works at the firm representing the plaintiffs.

The legal battle follows a successful night for Democrats nationwide, including:

  • Zohran Mamdani sweeping to victory as New York City’s new mayor, with 50.4% of the vote. Mamdani campaigned on a platform focused on affordability, including raising corporate taxes, and becomes the first mayoral candidate in the city to receive over a million votes since 1969.

  • Abigail Spanberger winning the Virginia gubernatorial race, becoming the state’s first female governor after defeating Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears.

  • Mikie Sherrill winning the New Jersey governor’s race against Republican Jack Ciattarelli.

  • California voters approving Proposition 50, giving Democrats the ability to redraw congressional maps in their favor, similar to GOP efforts in Texas.
