I'm Not Running for the 10th Senate Presidency: Senate President Lawan Sets the Record Straight

Dr. Ahmad Lawan, the Senate President, has refuted rumors circulating in certain sections of the media that he intends to run for the position of the nation's third-highest-ranking official in the upcoming inauguration of the 10th National Assembly.

Speculation has been rife that the outgoing Senate President has joined the group of contenders vying for the prestigious position, aiming to secure a second term in office.

In a statement personally signed by Lawan and released to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, he clarified that as a member of the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), he is committed to honoring the agreed zoning arrangements. Consequently, he stated unequivocally that he would not act contrary to these arrangements.

Lawan emphasized that he has not expressed his interest in the Presidency of the 10th Senate to anyone nor held any meetings pertaining to such a pursuit. He urged the public to disregard the reports circulating in the media.

The statement issued by Lawan reads: "I have come across media reports suggesting that I have entered the race for the Presidency of the 10th Senate. Normally, I wouldn't have deemed it necessary to respond to such reports, but when falsehoods go unaddressed, they tend to create an illusion of truth."

"The truth of the matter is that I have neither disclosed my intentions to anyone nor engaged in any discussions regarding running for the Presidency of the 10th Senate. Therefore, I urge the public to disregard these reports."

"I remain firmly committed to the leadership of our esteemed party, the APC, in our collective efforts to address the various challenges arising from the leadership contests within the 10th National Assembly. My focus will continue to be directed towards this objective."

It should be noted that Lawan had previously contested the presidential primary election of the APC last year, finishing in fourth place behind the winner and current President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi (who secured second position), and the outgoing Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who placed third in the contest.
