Abuja Federal High Court Encourages Political Solution in Nnamdi Kanu's Trial

The Abuja Federal High Court issued a directive on Wednesday, urging the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, and Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to pursue a political solution and reconciliation in the ongoing terrorism trial.

Justice Binta Nyako issued the order, invoking the court's authority under Section 17 of the Federal High Court Act.

Section 17 of the Federal High Court Act empowers the court to facilitate reconciliation among the involved parties and promote the amicable settlement of proceedings.

In response, the prosecutor, Ademoyega Awomolo, SAN, informed the court that he had no objection to a political settlement of the case. He suggested that Kanu's legal team should engage directly with the Attorney General.

Kanu's Lead Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, did not raise any objections to the proposal for a political settlement.

Following these discussions, Justice Nyako adjourned the case until September 24 for further proceedings.

Nnamdi Kanu has been in custody since June 2021 when he was apprehended in Kenya and returned to Nigeria. Various organizations, including the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, have called on President Bola Tinubu to consider a political resolution to Kanu's prolonged detention.
