ASUU Issues Ultimatum to Federal Government: Address Demands or Face Industrial Action

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a three-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to address its demands, aiming to prevent industrial action.

Comrade Salim Ahmed, Chairperson of ASUU at Federal University Dutse (FUD) Branch in Jigawa State, delivered the warning during an emergency press conference held at the FUD ASUU Secretariat in Dutse.

Ahmed emphasized that the ASUU leadership had repeatedly attempted to engage with the government since its inception on May 29, 2023, but to no avail.

He highlighted key issues such as the renegotiation of the FGN/ASUU 2009 agreement, which encompasses welfare, university autonomy, funding for university revitalization, and the proliferation of public universities. Other concerns included conditions of service, the dissolution of governing councils, withheld salaries, IPPIS-related issues, and the adoption of UTAS.

With the government seemingly reluctant to address these issues decisively, ASUU members across branches felt compelled to inform the public through press conferences. They sought to raise awareness among stakeholders about the government's failure to resolve these lingering issues.

ASUU plans to mobilize its members and further sensitize them within the next three weeks. The union urges the government to engage with its leadership to avoid an unnecessary industrial crisis in the already fragile university system.
